Why choose stainless steel?
Carbon Steel:
Carbon steel is normal steel, it is widely available and inexpensive compared to other metals. Steel is suited for use in a biodiesel processor but will corrode over time. For example, a 55-gallon drum is a common material used in the construction of a biodiesel processor, under most circumstance will corrode to a point of replacement after about a year. The steel corrodes due to air coming into contact with it's surface not because of the chemicals. Steel plumbing is often used in biodiesel processors, it is the best plumbing choice that can be obtained by the normal hardware store. Steel plumbing is often known as Black plumbing or Black steel plumbing. This plumbing is very inexpensive and strong. However black steel plumbing will corrode over time if air contacts it. Therefore the exterior of the plumbing is the first to corrode because it is always in contact with air. The outside of black plumbing can be painted to prevent oxidation, however the inside of plumbing and the inside of tanks can not because the paint will only erode as liquid quickly rushes over it. Carbon steel is the best choice for a low budget processor.
Stainless steel:
Stainless steel is the best choice for processor construction as it will not corrode or stain, however stainless is the most expensive metal on this list. Stainless is compatible with biodiesel and methoxide, but it is often too expensive for the homebrewer and is usually used in industrial applications. Stainless plumbing is far superior to any other type of plumbing but it is about four times the cost of black steel and is not available in the normal hardware store, it must be order from an industrial equipment dealer.

Water washing of Bio Diesel has been the traditional way of cleaning the soap and glycerol from the made Bio Oil.
Because we know other solutions to be better. We recommend DRY washing - needing no water. It is faster than water . Anyone who knows biodiesel knows what issues there are with water.
In the UK using water is costly. Some companies don't tell the truth about water washing and when asked about the water waste say "just put it down the drain and don't tell anyone". This is ignorant advice. The fines are huge.

THE MEDIA DOES NOT NEED FILTRATION DURING THE PROCESS, BUT I RECOMEND A 1 MICRON FILTER AFTER THE USE OF THE SYSTEM BEFORE USE IN A CAR.
IT REMOVES PRODUCTION RESIDUES, SOAPS, FUEL CONTAMINANTS AND WATER IN A SINGLE PASS. 1Kg WILL TREAT BETWEEN 350 TO 700 LITRES. IF AN AVERAGE OF 500 LITRES IS TAKEN, THIS IS 0.8 PENCE PER LITRE. TO MONITOR WHEN THE MEDIA IS 'SPENT' EITHER TAKE A SAMPLE OF THE WASHED BIODIESEL WHEN THE SYSTEM IS FIRST USED.. IT SHOULD BE CRYSTAL CLEAR. AFTER 350 LITRES PER Kg, TAKE REGULAR SAMPLES,.. THE MEDIA IS SPENT WHEN THE BIODIESEL STARTS TO BE CLOUDY. IT CAN ALSO BE MONITORED BY ACIDITY CHANGE.. RAW BIODIESEL IS NORMALLY PH8.5 TO PH9.. WELL DRIED IS DOWN TO 7 TO 7.9. WHEN YOUR FIGURE STARTS TO CREEP UP, TIME TO CHANGE. THE MEDIA IS NOT REGENERABLE.
I HAVE SEEN THIS MEDIA AT WORK.. A SAMPLE OF REALLY POOR BIODIESEL, THAT FORMED AN IMMEDIATE EMULSION WITH WATER THAT WOULD NOT SETTLE, BECAME PERFECT AFTER ONE PASS!
WHEN FIRST USED, THE MEDIA MAY WASH OUT A SMALL AMOUNT OF FINE DUST, SO ITS BEST TO RECIRCULATE THE FIRST 50 LITRES THROUGH THE WASH TOWER FOR A FEW MINUTES. AFTER THAT, YOU WILL GET PERFECT RESULTS.
