Bio Fuel Generations - The Background

Both "Fuel Generators" Andy & Chris studied separate Engineering subjectsat college, with each having over 30 years of practical experience. Andy focussed on Food, Pharmaceutical and Industrial processing, Chris worked in electrical, Automotive and Food processing. Their client list includes many of the UK's and international top company' names, however they have also solved a vast array of technical problems posed by small companies. With the world facing shortages of mineral reserves and the ever increasing financial & environmental burden of producing CO2 from it, they decided that they would utilise their combined skills and do something pro-activeas a solution. When Rudolf Diesel first invented his combustion engine, he knew that it could operate on a wide variety of fuel sources; it is only now that the economic and environmental circumstances make BioDiesel - home production, viable.
The Development
Small scale production has its own advantages and challenges; these have been thoroughly addressed with the BioDiesel Fuel Reactor. The “Gen.” part is all about sustainable fuels for those generations that follow us. We promote the use of locally sourced waste oils instead of stocks that have been transported halfway round the world.
Countless hours of laboratory and production trials have led to the production design, focussing on quality, simplicity and affordability. The latter was vital. If the processor could show a net return on investment in less than a year, it could go on to save the user (or group of users) thousands of pounds. High quality stainless steel has been used to maximise the life of the vessel, to assist with maintenance and preserve the recycling value at end of life. To maximise the efficiency of the chemical reaction, the process harnesses the “Pentramix©” technology.

The Process

WARNING - this text is not intended as work instructions. Lots of safety precautions must be adhered to and protective goggles, gloves etc. must be worn. This will be covered in the manual that is supplied with the processor.

After sourcing your waste oil, you should de-water it and filter as much as possible to assist the reaction and reduce the amount of filtering later. It should then be held in your storage drum(s) and await use.

The processor can be filled either manually through the loading port or you can connect your storage drum to the intake valve, start the pump and fill the vessel to the desired level (the design permits a batch size of between 50 and 150 litres). In about 3 minutes it will be full and ready to go. We suggest that the cheapest way of heating the oil is to buy a simple plug in timer and set the heating to be done overnight on Economy 7. Next morning you can complete the processing.

When the oil has reached the correct temperature (shown on the gauge and prevented from overheating by a thermostat) you can carry out titration. Details are provided with the reactor. Simply, titration is a test of how acid the oil has become through frying food. We have to add the correct amount of catalyst to compensate for this during processing. (10 minutes maximum)

A Methoxide mixer is part of the processor. Add the required amount of methanol to the smaller vessel, add the required catalyst (potassium hydroxide) and seal the lid. After opening and closing the appropriate valves turn on the air compressor. This will dissolve the catalyst into Methoxide. (5 to 15 minutes)
After opening the processor valves, the pump is switched on and the Methoxide is blended into the circulating oil (5 - 20 minutes)

Let mixing run for 60 -90 minutes, switch off and let it stand for 8 hours. During this time the by-product (glycerol) will settle to the bottom, drain off.

You now need to wash out any soaps/salts remaining in the BioDiesel before use. This can be achieved in 1 of 2 ways.

Dry wash - the use of a resin filtration system.

Wash & bubble dry - misting of the diesel with water, drain off, and use the bubble dry lance supplied, to drive off moisture and any methanol.

Drain off through the filters, fill and seal jerry cans or containers.

Work time about an hour, with some wait/settling time on top. It would be practical to run about 3 batches per week, enough for 450 litres or 9 tanks full in a family car.
Protect the Environment for our Children
Most people agree that BioDiesel is a green renewable fuel with a cleanerburn from its higher cetane value (like octane in petrol). The plants thatproduce the oils take in the CO2 from the atmosphere using photo-synthesis, trapping the carbon and releasing the oxygen for us all to breathe. Thiscarbon cycle does contribute to reducing global warming, saving the earth'slife support system for our future "Generations". It will also provide themwith a long term solution for their source of renewable "Fuel".

Glossary

IPA Isopropyl Alcohol a spirit used to clean or dilute difficult compounds (also kills bacteria)SVO Straight Vegetable Oil (not been used for cooking etc)WVO Waste Vegetable OilMethoxide A catalyst compound for separating BioDiesel from unwanted glycerine (the main constituent of soap) made from Sodium Hydroxide and Methanol.BioDiesel A fuel made from natural oils and fats Reaction A chemical process that takes place after mixing 2 chemicals, heating or some other processCO2 Carbon Dioxide - what we breathe out and plants breathe to live Catalyst A compound or chemical element that is added to a base material to speed up a reaction process.Cetane The measurement of how easily a compound will burn RME Rapeseed Methyl Ester - a BioDiesel made from the oil recovered from the rape plant (yellow fields in springtime)B5 5% BioDiesel mixed with a 95% mineral diesel ratio (like "City Diesel")Bubble wash A process using water to remove soaps from BioDiesel. Bubbles rise through water and then the BioDiesel taking some water with it. The water then sinks back down taking unwanted soaps to the bottom.Titration The test carried out on the raw material to find out how acidic it is so that you can add the correct amount of alkaline for the processing Esterification The process of producing Methyl - Esters (BioDiesel) from vegetable or animal fats Reaction temperature The temperature that must be reached before the Esterification reaction is most efficient.
